So this is somewhat if a long shot but I thought I might ask:

Some of you know I live in Alabama, but I'm from Washington. I'll likely be in AL for the foreseeable future, but I miss my family badly. I've been gone from them for the majority if my adult life. My parents are gone-- both dying while I was in othet states. I have one uncle left and he isnt getting any younger, my nieces and nephews are all growing up without me.

I want to start going home a couple of times a year to go see them before I don't recognize my family anymore.

Does anyone have connections for cheap flights? Or advice on how to start getting cheaper flight tickets. Im not rolling in the money but I also don't want to rely on other people to pay for my tickets since I'm home sick, not dying.

  • @Cobaltasaurus what price point are you looking for? I don't have connections but I seem to have really good online search fu as far as plane tickets go.

    You brought this on yourself!

  • My main piece of advice when looking to book travel is to do so using your browser's "incognito" mode. Some places raise prices based on how often one views a certain flight or flights to a certain destination.

Skiplagged and Hopper are two great iOS apps that will watch fares for you and tell you when the best time to buy is based on when you think you're going to go. Skiplagged also has a website and has been the source of some pretty cheap flights for me in the past.

Hnnngg... Like less than 300 each way? Like... Less than 200 each way?

  • A lot of it depends on time, day, and destination. What cities do you want to travel to, and what times? If there's a hub involved, costs can go down. I just got my housemate a round trip from MN to FL for less than 300 ..though honestly, I'm thinking it's because nobody in their right mind wants to go to Florida in July.

If there's an airline that handles the route, get a club membership. I flew from CA to IL for work a lot, and I would often bump to first or get free flights from miles and using the card. Club membership is worth it if you travel 3+ times a year, hands down. Better seats, free checking luggage, sometimes better boarding options as well.

  • @Cobaltasaurus I don't have any links yet since I'm on mobile right now but try Google, search for something like "Alabama to Seattle roundtrip" and then look for leaving and returning dates in August and September. Looking in those two months I'm seeing prices in the upper 200s/lower 300s for a round-trip.
