The Black Watchmen

This just released on Steam. I'm intrigued but also unsure if I should wait a while or skip it entirely. Anyone have any thoughts or reviews?

    THE BLACK WATCHMEN

The [World's] First Permanent Alternate Reality Game

    sip

If it's done by the people who did some of The Secret World ARGs, it's probably going to be worth participating.

  • @Thenomain It's done by the people who did the 2012 Funcom ARG.

Unless it's free though, no, it's not really worth it. People running it make Mu* people look sane by comparison.. Please do not give these people money.

Also it's Early access. Never $40 for a game in early access.

I have done some research and the game asks (at a very early point) for real world information: cell phone, age, gender, and address. I am personally leery of that kind of stuff but it is my understanding it is part of the intended game experience to immerse their players by having them interact with the real world as part of the game.

  • I should make an MMO called "You go out, go to clubs, visit tourist locations, go to bars, get food, go to shops, pay $10/month to be told what to do.."

Well it is ostensibly an ARG so you would give personal information like an email or phone number in a real world one. And when they did the "Preview" of this the company flew someone to Montreal to pick up a package and we talked with them onlie and watched them and figured out puzzles. They will supposedly go as deep as you allow it.

One ARG that recently came to light took money as well, but it was microtransactions.

One of the goals of this company was to "Buy a building in Detroit because it's cheap there right now, as a home office people could come and visit." This was also after calling all of the people who had lifetime subscriptions to The Secret World (A game they bought the right from from Funcom to use Black Watchmen which is set in an alternate but parallel world of the Secret World Game and our own.) Leechers and moochers (when they were being nice) because they were going with the free stuff they offered them. And as I said, it's on the nice end.

I would link you to the forums on MMORPG.com but anything said about them that isn't strictly kissing their ass is deleted.

But still because it should not be said often enough: Don't pay $40 for an early access game on Steam. In fact, don't buy games early access on Steam Especial Steam Greenlight, unless you don't like money. And really if you just want to throw money away, I will give you my address and put it to good use.

Also it's $40 AND a subscription. Really, if you don't want your money that badly I will take it off your hands, no charge.

I'd just call it The Simulations.

    Oh wait.

  • Oh I was unclear. This is a RL MMO. You get text messages that give you missions and you check in at places, scan receipts. Send me my monay.

I am fascinated to hear what "O" means in your RL MMO. :)

  • Massively Multiplayer Online Real Life Role Playing Game Battleground Experience.

Adding Experience raises the sub to $12.50 a month.

    Huh. Well now I know.

I think I'll wait and buy that Telltale Borderlands riff instead.

  • Tales from the Borderlands? SO FUN.

So much this. While there are occasional exceptions (sometimes Early Access games go on ridiculous sale, so yeah I'll pay $10 for a game I'll probably like instead of $40+ when it comes out), the rest is you basically paying to beta test games that may never see the light of day.

I admit that part of my distaste for this is not actually the beta test part. I've participated in beta testing programs for scores of games. Sometimes as part of a pre-order, so I suppose I also paid for it, but I also understood what beta test meant, something that soooo many people who buy in to Early Access games do not. They think they paid their money already so they should be getting a fully playable game experience, and get very upset when they don't, or when features change out from under them thus disrupting their gameplay. You know, like has happened in every beta ever. Even worse for games in alpha. >_<

  • I buy some games in Early Access. Most of the ones I've bought so far have been really great though.

Sunless Sea, Battle Brothers, Sovereignty (maybe? dunno yet.), and Massive Chalice have been good fun.

Fallen: A2P Protocol has been garbage. I regret buying it early access. Serves me right for wanting a post-apocalyptic x-com style game.
